Retinol: A Beginners Guide

If you haven’t already heard, there’s quite a bit of hype around the decades-old, and still popular today, ingredient, RETINOL. So what’s the big deal?

WHAT IS RETINOL?

Retinol is a retinoid formed from essential Vitamin A. When used consistently, retinol visibly reduces the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, discoloration, and dark spots. It also speeds up cell turnover and skin elasticity. Simply put, it’s an antioxidant powerhouse anti-aging ingredient that works deep beneath the epidermis to assist in new skin cell production

ACNE:

Retinol is also beneficial for treating acne and acne scars. It works to prevent clogged pores and control sebum productionespecially for those with oily skinIt’s vital to continue using retinol after the acne subsides to help reduce post-acne scarring and pigmentation.

DRAWBACKS:

There may be some side effects when using retinol initially or for the first time, which include irritation, peeling, inflammation, redness, or acne purging. Still, if it does happen, there are measures you can take to lessen the reaction.

REMINDER: If you do experience some irritation, that’s part of the process. It is best to start a retinol product once a week in the evening and progress to 2-3 times a week. Also, if your skin is more sensitive try applying your moisturizer first, but to keep in mind, studies show it decreases the skin’s reactions and may slow the resulting process.
HOW TO INCORPORATE RETINOL IN YOUR ROUTINE:
If you’re just beginning to use retinol, start slow. Use your retinoids once a week at first and slowly increase to 2-3 times a week.

Several derivatives of Vitamin A are available which can come in a cream, gel, serum, foam, or peel. The Deep Pore Cleanser is a great introduction with Retinyl Palmitate, a gentler retinoid.

For a retinol treatment targeting the thinner more delicate skin surrounding the eyes and neck, Eye & Neck Intense Lift is potent yet still gentle.

If you’re looking for a professional treatment, the Retinol Bio-Resurfacing Snow Algae Peel can work it’s magic in the treatment room, or deliver professional results when used as a home care solution. It is recommended to use it in the evening 1-3 times a week before applying your night cream. It restores the skin’s barrier, boosts collagen production, enables the skin to resist environmental damage and aging, along with many more benefits

It’s never too early or too late to start taking care of your skin. Typically, teens start using retinol to treat acne. However, we recommend to start incorporating retinol in your skincare routine later in your 20s or early 30s.
